We have been devastated by the destruction and violence that have become many people’s daily reality. As concerned citizens, we feel it is time that our political representatives hear our voices loud and clear calling for an immediate and unconditional end to the bloodshed and a withdrawal of invading forces. As a follow-up to our previous vigils, attended by hundreds of Americans of all backgrounds and faiths, we are repeating the initiative this coming Thursday.

Thursday will mark the 30th day of this latest war in the Middle East and our 4th weekly vigil to protest our government’s unconscionable failure to call for an immediate and unconditional end to the violence and a withdrawal of invading forces. We will keep petitioning our government for as long as it takes. Please join us again or for the first time to take a stand.

On Thursday, please bring candles. Feel free to bring any flags you may have. We request that no other signs, banners, or posters be displayed at the vigil.

As Americans of all backgrounds and faiths, we value peace and human life on our shores and beyond. Far away, in the Middle East, Israel, one of America’s staunchest allies, has laid siege to Lebanon and Gaza. In the escalating violence, over 1011 civilians have lost their lives in Lebanon, 36 civilians were killed in Israel, and over 203 civilians have died in Palestine. Lebanon’s infrastructure has been laid to waste by Israeli forces and upwards of 25% of its population has been forced to flee. Lebanon is once again in ruins, teetering on the brink of economic, social and political collapse.

As citizens, we are appalled that our elected representatives stand idly by or – worse yet – applaud and step-up arms shipments, effectively encouraging carnage. We are outraged that our government has not yet called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the warring parties and a withdrawal of invading forces to preserve innocent civilian lives. Instead, our President has repeatedly stated that he will not demand a ceasefire.

Our last vigil drew over 400 constituents. Our next vigil will occur on Thursday, August 17, and we will sustain this effort for as long as it takes until our government acts responsibly.

America can stop the bloodshed. That we have not yet done so runs contrary to our firmest beliefs as human beings, to our interests as Americans, and to our views as voters. America should stop the bloodshed and as your constituents, we expect and demand that you call for an immediate and unconditional end to the hostilities.

In past weeks we have seen the catastrophic events of the conflict
between Israel and Lebanon unfold and magnify into a devastating series of
violent atrocities and war crimes. We hear of the hundreds of lives lost, the
homes destroyed, the many thousands made homeless, families torn apart and
livelihoods crushed. This evening, Amnesty International members around
the world, our supporters, our friends and our fellow partner organizations
all stand together in solidarity with those who have suffered in this
conflict.

We mourn deeply for the victims and our hearts reach out to their
families to wish them strength in this time of chaos. Our thoughts also stay
closely with those surviving the conflict in the face of extreme danger, to
whom we wish courage and immediate safety. We call on Israel and Hizbullah to
start respecting the lives and the human rights of innocent people. And we
implore other governments around the world to intervene to help the
people of Israel and Lebanon - and to join our call for an end to this
senseless violence. Today we stand together with a simple message: For all our
sakes, ceasefire.
